Call for awareness on stalking and control in Pacific communities
Alofimua Genevieve Sang-Yum says more awareness is needed around controlling behaviours.
I’m pleased to share an important interview I conducted with Pacific Media Network about New Zealand’s recent changes to anti-stalking laws. These new laws establish stalking as a standalone offence, carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison.
In this conversation, I highlight the importance of culturally sensitive education in Pacific communities, emphasising clear distinctions between genuine care and harmful controlling behaviours. I outline key ‘red flags’, such as unwanted surveillance, excessive communication, and unannounced visits, and advocate for greater awareness and community support to foster healthier relationships.
